Taking the Monkeys to the Zoo

Baird Night at the Zoo (Mike's work) is always a hit with the little kids. This year our oldest two kids stayed home because they had plans to attend the Shakespeare play, Much Ado About Nothing, performed by many of their friends and cousins.

Seamus was at the Milwaukee zoo two years ago, when he was just one month old, but of course he doesn't remember it.  His eyes grew bigger and bigger as we saw the sites. And that's sayin' a lot, cause they're already pretty darn big.  His eyes really became super-sized when he experienced the train.  The train was definitely the highlight for Seamus.

The girls, on the other hand, were excited about the temporary butterfly exhibit.  Mike kept teasing them that they came all the way to a large zoo, filled with exotic animals from all over the world, and they want to spend their time with a bunch of insects.  As if we didn't have enough of those already in Wisconsin.

And to make matters worse, the butterfly exhibit is in a very hot and humid building. On purpose. Walking out of that building made the regular hot n humid 85 degree temperature feel like air conditioning.

But one look at this little girl's face made the sweltering insect and human terrarium all worth the time and effort.

Teresa, Bridget and Molly Grace caught many different kinds of butterflies.  Erin was completely fascinated by it all.

Poor Aidan.  He wanted to see the great apes and that was one of the only exhibits we didn't get to.  Good thing he lives with a bunch of monkeys.

The merry-go-round was also fun for Erin and Seamus.  Here is a picture of Erin spotting me as she came around.

Oh, and another highlight for Molly Grace was the Sponge-Bob ice cream bar with the bubble gum eyes.  She remembered it from two years ago and talked about it on the ride down.  She was not disappointed : )

Until next time, thank you Baird!

Bulletin Board Memo

We just happened to see this posted in grand central bulletin board territory...

It looks likes someone has been a member of this family long enough to know that things work out best when you take the initiative to get things done.  This someone happens to have a birthday coming up....

Bay Beach

Once again, we made it to Bay Beach, a favorite spot.  This year they added the Zippen Pippen roller coaster!

A Visit with the Cool Cousins!

We had a great reunion this past week with Tim, Suzy, Aileen, Joe and Mara!  Of course Grandma and Grandpa D and the GB cousins were with us as well. We had a house full of kids, from 18 year old teens down to two year old toddlers.

Cousin Aileen, Cousin Colleen and Teresa

A big gang playing games

Some of the activities seemed to revolve around a theme this year.  Greek gods and goddesses were taking over the house.  They had new names, new costumes, new customs and lots of new drama.

Here is the actual filmed drama production...

Lil Elmo

The Halloween bin is used year-round at our house.  We had a recent visit from Elmo...

"YOU......Are you happy?"

These four little words, coming out of the mouth of our little Erin, earn a gold medal this week.  As you may guess, speech is delayed nearly 100% of the time in those with Down syndrome.  Oh, don't get me wrong, Erin chatters all the time!  Understanding that chatter -articulation- is the difficult part.  She knows what she is saying, but we, on the receiving end, sometimes fumble with our guesses.  We are becoming more seasoned at understanding her dialect. Nonetheless, we do guess, often over and over, in hopes of making sense of whatever it is she is wanting to communicate.  Erin does use sign language, which helps tremendously.  She is a master at charades...I'm always gonna be picking that girl, hands down, on my team if I want to win at charades.

When Erin is not chattering, in her sing-songy little voice, she often communicates in one or two word phrases, especially when she is serious about getting what she wants.  In single words, we can nearly 100% of the time understand what she wants or needs. But we have been at the one or two word phrases stage for a long time....

So, the other night Erin was lying in bed singing Veggie Tale songs, specifically Madame Blueberry songs.  Suddenly, she looked at her sister Eileen, who was lying in the other bed, and in perfect Madame Blueberry imitation said, "YOU.....are you happy?" She even pointed and used appropriate facial expression, just like Madame.

I'll take it.  Four words.  Perfectly articulated. Madame Blueberry accent and all.  It is times like these, times so ordinary for typical kids that is is taken for granted, that our Erin really shines and makes us so proud.

Fourth of July

Here are a few pictures of our mini firework celebration. The mosquitoes where horrible, so we didn't stay outside too long!

Eileen is either bustin' a move or scratching a mosquito!?

Bridget and Cousin Collen

Now, on to the real excitement!  Erin somehow managed to put her head through the spindles on our stairs and could not get it back out.  Seriously, this was one impossible dilemma.  We still do not know how she did this!  I wasn't home at the time, but Mike tried a couple solutions to remove her head before finally breaking the spindle.  He turned her over, so he could pull her head out without having to deal with her ears....no go.  Then he tried greasing her head up....no go.  At first she was laughing, but as time when on, she started to panic, which is when Mike broke the spindle.  LOL.  Thankfully, she is just fine.  Crazy!
